Travelling with a digital National ID card

The digital National ID card is the official document issued by the Spanish National Police that allows citizens to identify themselves digitally through the official MiDNI app of the Spanish National Police. Spanish citizens can currently use this digital format as a valid travel document to board our domestic flights within Spain.

Please note that a photo, screenshot or PDF of your National ID card stored on your mobile phone is not a valid document for boarding.

Even so, to avoid any unforeseen issues and make airport security checks as smooth as possible, we recommend that you always carry your physical National ID card with you.

Requirements for travelling with a digital National ID card

You can travel with your digital National ID card on domestic flights within Spain, provided you meet the requirements below.

Only valid for Spanish citizens

The use of this digital format for travel is only permitted for passengers of Spanish nationality who hold a valid digital National ID card. As this validation is linked to local authorities, other forms of digital identity verification for foreign passengers are not accepted.

Only permitted on domestic flights within Spain

The use of a digital National ID card for travel is only permitted on domestic flights within Spain (routes departing from and arriving within Spanish territory). For any international flight — including destinations within the Schengen Area — you must still present a valid physical passport or physical National ID card.

What about digital identity documents from other countries?

At present, the acceptance of digital travel documentation is limited to the Spanish digital National ID card. If you hold a nationality other than Spanish, you will not be able to use your country’s digital identity document to board our flights.

Rules for minors

Minors may also use a digital National ID card to travel, although the conditions vary depending on their age and the availability of digital formats.

Minors aged 14 to 18

From the age of 14, minors must have their own National ID card and may therefore use their digital National ID card to board our domestic flights in the same way as any adult passenger, provided they are Spanish citizens.

Children under 14 and infants

Children under the age of 14 travelling with an accompanying adult are the responsibility of the adult aged over 18 with whom they are travelling. In this case, they may travel without a National ID card or passport. If they are travelling alone, they must carry their National ID card or passport (expired documents are accepted).

For children under 14, access to digital identity applications may not be available. Therefore:

  • National ID card or passport: travelling with physical documentation is recommended to make the boarding process quicker.
  • Birth certificate: on domestic flights where the child’s identity may be verified through their parents’ or guardians’ documentation, remember that original physical documents must always be presented.

Please note that a photo, screenshot or PDF of documentation stored on a mobile phone is not a valid document for boarding.
