Carriage of battery-powered wheelchairs

For safety reasons, if you are travelling with a wheelchair or mobility aid with a battery, the device must be checked to ensure it meets all requirements before being accepted on board.

This verification will be carried out at the airport, so it is recommended to bring all the necessary documentation to allow the following checks:

  • Type of device, brand and model

  • Weight (in kg) and dimensions of the device: length, height and width

  • Type of battery (and watt-hours for lithium batteries)

  • Information on how to disable circuits and isolate the battery to prevent it from being switched on accidentally during the flight

If the wheelchair or mobility aid does not meet the required conditions, its transport will have to be refused.

Battery type
Description
Non-spillable
Dry battery (including integrated battery)

Gel battery

Wet (sealed) battery

• The battery terminals and other electrical circuits must be isolated to prevent the device from being accidentally switched on.

• The battery must be securely attached to the device or removed according to the manufacturer's instructions (if designed to do so).

• You can carry a maximum of one spare battery, with no power limitation.

Lithium battery  Lithium ion battery

• If the battery is NOT removable:

  • It must be securely attached to the device. In this case, there is no power limitation for the battery.
  • You must ensure that all electrical circuits are isolated and cannot be accidentally activated.

• If the battery IS removable:

  • It must be removed according to the manufacturer's instructions and carried on board.
  • The battery must not exceed 300 Wh, or if 2 batteries are carried, these may not exceed 160 Wh each.
  • The spare batteries have the same power requirements, so you can carry a maximum of:
    • 1 lithium ion battery that may NOT exceed 300 Wh, or
    • 2 batteries that do not exceed 160 Wh each.
    • Removed or spare batteries must be protected from damage (e.g. by placing each battery in a protective pouch).
Spillable Wet battery

These types of batteries are not accepted on board.
  • Removed or spare batteries must be protected against damage (for example, individually placed in protective covers).
